He could smell the water? But if a gasket leaked he would also smell the water would he not?
Garages are not psychic. They can guess a price but unless they actually do some diagnostic work they wont know for sure. And to check the waterpump it requires stripping some parts. So its just as easy to replace the parts than refit the faulty ones. Did you really want to pay him almost as much to not sort the job?
If i were a garage its payup or no car.
Do you want to save £20 or so and refit the old cambelt thats possibly had hot water spraying onto it?
