Password protecting PDF documents

With all these financial institutions providing PDF statements, has anyone got any idea how to password protect them cheaply? I do not want to pay Adobe's £100s to have the facility. Wouldn't mind paying 10 or 20 quid, though. Or any other ideas how to securly keep these types of files, particularly on an SD card on a mobile device?

These are fun (although USB rather than SD)

Rather than trying to encrypt the PDFs individually, I'd put them (and any other types of files) in a zipped/ compressed folder which is encrypted.
I don't have links to hand but I'm sure there are free utilities which do this. I think 7-zip may do this, for instance.
Or use something like Sophos Free Encryption which I think works along similar lines.0 -
Yes, I would definately prefer to encrypt a folder rather than individual files, however I would still like to be able to access it from my mobile (android) as well as from a desktop... would any of these solutions work?I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?0

I don't have an android device so I don't know. However it seems from this article that there are Android apps which can open encrypted zip files:

I don't know if they work with 7-zip files but some of them seem free, (and 7-zip is free) so maybe worth a go. I note that WinZip has some particularly bad reviews though.0
