First Bill From Original Supplier

Options
Hello,
We've recently moved into a new house and before we've had a chance to check out and compare the suppliers the original supplier has already sent their first bill (even though we've made no contact with them).

If we do decide on another supplier must we pay this first bill or do we just give the new supplier the initial meter readings (rather than the end meter readings on the received first bill) and pay their first bill?

Many Thanks!

Warren

Yes, you have to pay this first bill. Now that you've moved into this new house you are deemed to have a contract with the existing supplier to the property. Which is just as well, as otherwise nobody would be supplying you with energy, which might prove inconvenient in practice.

It's your job to take readings and register with the existing suppliers as soon as you move in, since you are in a deemed contract with them. You can't switch away until you have done this. A deemed contract also puts you on the most expensive tariff (Standard).
Why do you think that you would (eventually) pay your new supplier for energy supplied by the existing supplier?
If your first bill is estimated then you need to supply up to date readings as well as your initial ones, and possibly evidence of your date of occupation.
