I use hotmail on a Galaxy S3 and when it suddenly stopped working I searched the web and found a solution that worked for me.

I had to delete the email account - all mail stored online so I wasn't worried about losing anything. Then recreate the mail account but change the exchange server setting to snt-m.hotmail.com where m.hotmail.com had previsously worked. Ive no idea why it stopped but this fixed it for me.

Not sure if this will be the same for you but it might.
  • Thanks Ant. This looks like it might be a potentially helpful solution, but sadly is rather over my head.

When you say 'all mail stored online' do you mean that deleting the account doesn't lose the mail? (Some of it is quite precious. Needless to say, I can access my account on laptop/tablet/desktop so if I need to back it up I can do, although I don't know how to do this quickly).

OK, then the next steps also go over my head :o

recreate the mail account - you mean sign up all over again with the same details? (And if the mail HASN'T been deleted, will this give me access to it again?)
change the exchange server setting.....ummmm where do I find this??????

Hoping you will be kind enough to persevere with me! :D

I absolutely guarantee that if you delete the account on your phone then all the mail stays in hotmail. Your phone actually makes a local 'copy' of recent mail to make things quicker (which is why you can read existing mail even when you are offline) but all your mail is stored on hotmails servers. However, before you delete the account on your phone follow the text below and post the info I ask for - I might be able to just tell you where to put some extra characters in your existing setup and if it works then bingo.

Are you using the built in mail app on the S3 or have you downloaded the hotmail app from the store?
On my S3 the builtin mail app icon is a white envelope with a red circle in the middle and a tiny orange number in the top right when there is unread mail. If its the same for you then let post back and i'll walk you through what to try.

Before you do - log on to hotmail using a PC and when its showing all your mail note the web address at the top of the page. This next bit is going to sound technical but its not really.
When I log on i can see a web address of snt002.mail.live.com/<then lots of other characters that dont matter here>
Simply note the characters before the text 'mail.live.com' (for me its 'snt002') and post them here - don't worry this isn't confidential information, its just the name of the server that you connect to.

The good news is that it's working again, but this is about the third time it's happened, although it's never lasted more than a day before (and I had to fiddle around a lot when it returned, this time, as all the display settings had changed).

I'm not using an app - I am going direct to the hotmail address, as I found when I used an app (on my last phone) it ate download allowance as it pushed my mail forward all the time. Perhaps this is the problem?
