Can I request a replacement?

Hello!
On Christmas Eve 2012, I bought a tablet PC from Tesco at the sale price of £50.
It's faulty and I have a reference number from their technical team to confirm this - along with date etc I contacted them to report the fault.
However, the price of the tablet has since gone back up to its normal price of £100, and has been out of stock until now.
As this was a gift for my Mother, I'd like the faulty tablet replaced, rather than having a refund.
Am I within my rights to request a replacement, rather than a refund? When I contacted Tesco by phone, they said I had to have a refund due to the increase in price. Are they right?
Obviously, I have the receipt as proof of purchase and I bought it on my credit card.
Many thanks for any advice you can give me. I've looked online and it's a little confusing as to whether the choice is mine or Tesco's.

The retailer has the right to repair, replace or refund whichever is the most cost effective for them.0

Thanks, molerat. Given the price increase since I bought the tablet, I'm guessing they're going to stick to giving me a refund...
Annoying, since had the price decreased in the interim, I'm sure they'd have insisted on a replacement.
I appreciate your help.0 -
Is this the Archos by chance? DD bought one herself on boxing day. Can I ask what the fault is?0

A refund can have "fair use" deducted from it so it may be a cash settlement you get but it could be lower than the purchase price0

Entirely correct, but as it has been less than 2 months, then I would not expect any deductions at all in this case.0 -
