Defleaing and worming kittens help?????

Hi all, just wondering your opinions on when to de flea and worm kittens, I have trawled the internet and found so many differnet answers that I think my head may well explode, some say 6-8 wks whilst others have said medication for worms can kill them until they are 6 months??
I have not actually got the kittens yet but will be getting them at 8 wks and I know the place i am getting them from will not be doing this for them so just wanted to get as much info as possible before then.

Thanks Claire

    Hi Claire,
The absolute best thing you can do for your kittens is get them registered at the vets, and ask them for advice on how to worm and de-flea them. (They'll also give you advice on neutering/spaying which is something that I would urge you to do)

Please don't be tempted to use over the counter options, as many of them are simply useless, or downright dangerous to use on kittens.

One other thing, an 8 week old kitten is still not really ready to leave mum, if there is any way that they can stay with mum until 12 weeks, you will help them tremendously - and you too ! They learn a lot of their social skills in those last few weeks - like not to bite or scratch quite so much, but I know it's not always possible.

And of course, last but not least, enjoy your new bundles of fun. And don't forget, a cardboard box is the greatest toy ever when you're a kitten ! :rotfl:

and a cat, I have to keep my boxes from Zooplus orders for the cat and kitten to play in. They play a lot of hide and seek in them. Probably one of the most used items.

I use Drontal tablets for our Kitten/Cat which is safe from 6 weeks up weighing 2kg+.

For fleas I have started using Advantage as fleas are apparently becoming immune to Frontline. Advantage and frontline are both spot on treatments and are suitable for kittens over 8 weeks old and weighing more than 1kg. It is worth noting that Advantage comes in small cat (for cats less than 4kg) and large cat (4kg+).
  • Thanks for the help, I was planning to register them with the vets as soon as get them, so will see what they recommend.

Also there is no option sadly for the kittens to stay until 12 weeks or I would not have taken them so early:(

Loving the cardboard boxes idea, with my amazon obsession they will be truly happy :o
  • Yes have also looked into the neutering side as well, my Husband says I have done more research about these kittens than I did when I had our children:)

Fleas - only get a product you can buy from the vet, nothing else will work as well - You can get Frontline spray,

    http://www.medicanimal.com/product/~frontline-spray/~product_id=413/~category_id=MA-PRESCRIPTIONS_A_Z-BY_NAME_E_F

squirt it onto rubber gloves, then rub all over the kittens paying attention to behind their ears, top of tail and under chin where fleas like to lurk. Give them a bath when you first get them and go thru their fur with a fine tooth comb. It all helps.

You can get Panacur paste online, £4 a syringe,

    http://www.medicanimal.com/product/~product_id=702;jsessionid=02ECC32680EAE833743075470E40A3FD.jvm1

suitable to use on kittens from 2 weeks, 1 notch every day for 3 days. Every 2 weeks up until they have their jabs, then it's once a month till they get neutered/spayed, then it's once every 3 months.
The vet will usually give you tablets. You can buy Milbemax online or Drontal, it's not that expensive.
Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind.
They say that talking to yourself is a sign of mental illness. So I talk to the cats instead.
