...Please don't refer to my opinions as 'promoting' or 'advertising' - neither of which are my intention. 'Alternative suggestions' might be a better phrase.
The OP did ask for somewhere to open an account. It's impossible to answer that question without naming a few banks etc. I call that being helpful, not advertising.
Totally agree with your sentiments though on free banking and how it should be widely available for all. If you know of any more IVA-friendly free accounts, please enlighten us. (I won't accuse you of advertising).
Thanks.0 -

Hi
OK, fair enough, no hard feelings I hope, I never harbour any, open posting is the name of the game.
For the record you put some good stuff up on here in my opinion and add a good balance.
Yours sincerely

Never any hard feelings. Always nice to have a range of opinions.
Good post about 'credit unions' - I had never heard of them. Might be a better option for opening a child's savings account, subject to locality as you say, and other qualifying criteria (shame they are so under-publicised as they are a great idea).
None that I qualify for near me sadly.0 -
It seems strange that your bank won't allow you to open a child's savings account.
Savings account can only accept credits, and only withdrawals on the balance, there is no borrowing involved, and no direct debits can be set up on them.
During my IVA (which finished in September, but I am still waiting for official completion - that's for another thread ), I opened a young saver account for my son (already had one for daughter, but son came along 3 years into IVA), an e-savings for myself, and an e-ISA. Not that I had much money in them but I like to shift the excess money at the beginning of the month to shift back for the mid-month bills so I don't overspend.
Anyhooooo, it seems odd that they won't allow you to open a savings account with them. It might be worth asking one of your parents to open a building society account for her, with a passbook system so that only withdrawals can be made with the passbook. She might get a better rate than with some banks anyway.0
