Back in the day when I worked for the Halifax, it was possible for an advisor to key a mortgage application get the valuation done, and depending on the LTV and credit scoring, it could auto-offer, and never be seen by an underwriter.

Of course, I don't know if this still could happen, but it COULD be possible for a person who knows the system to key what the system wants to see. Not saying it has happened here, but the OP might consider letting this can of worms stay closed

  • I don't think your complaint will go anywhere with the Halifax. That 4 year default would stop a mortgage application dead in its tracks with most high street banks.

I manage a branch for a high street bank (not Halifax) and we get customers all the time coming in to gloat about the fact that we declined their application but a broker managed to magically get the application with us accepted.

I appreciate that most are professional but I am very sceptical of Brokers sometimes...

Works both ways. I have turned clients away due to having nowhere near the levels of income required only to find they secure the mortgage in branch without any proper checks.

Collusion between the 'adviser' and applicants to get the deal done.

I have to agree with GMS here.

The in-branch antics of some lenders takes the breath away, where cases which would under no circumstances be accepted via the broker route are routinely accepted at branch level.

We're talking about insufficient income, short period self-employment the kind of stuff which used to get stuffed in the "self-cert" hole, to be honest.

As an ex-member of Halifax staff on the administrative side, I used to come across shady dealing from both in branch advisors and brokers.

It gave me great pleasure to stamp it out, whenever I could.
