Credit card protection on an international payment?

We're about to book a tour in India, with an Indian company. I have no doubt they are legitimate, but wondered if we still receive credit card protection on such a purchase or not?

The payment options are by card (debit or credit) on their website hitch I am happy with (fully invoiced properly), but there is a surcharge with credit card and none by debit card. Or I can pay via a bank transfer (less keen on this).

If there is no protection using the credit card like this, are there any other reasons we should consider using it for the payment bearing in mind there is no surcharge using a debit card?

The protection offered by Section 75 is the same overseas as in the UK.

To reduce fees, it may be beneficial to pay £1 on credit card and the rest on debit card.

Wouldn't that defeat the point of the protection from the credit card though? I thought you also had to spend minimum £100 to benefit from it? Do correct me if I am wrong though!

    NO.....
The item price has to be £100 or greater upto £30K.

So make even a 1p payment would afford S75 cover.

A point to note is that for S75 to come into play. You would have to be going direct to the holiday co and not just through a 3rd party booking company.

OP. What exactly are you worried about?

Ok. Thanks for correcting me. I never knew that.

To be honest I'm not sure what I'm worried about overall. We've been in a couple of really crap situations on holiday before and been stung, but apart from our honeymoon we've never spent this kind of money on a holiday before! I travel around the world all the time for work, but everything's on a company card and i have people in the office to help resolve problems if they arrive, but this is different. £4.5k, our money, my wife's dream holiday to India that she has wanted forever, and were relying on people half way around the world to provide the tour.

Given our normal holiday would be a week in turkey on the cheap I think I'm just nervous and want to know what comeback we ave if anything goes wrong.

I think you've answered my question though. In terms of our booking we've booked the flights through a uk company, but the tour and hotels in India have been booked through an agent in India. If my understanding of what you've said above is correct we'd be covered for the tour but not the hotels?

Well if you get there and the hotels have not been booked. Then there are chargeback rights to non reciept.

Best advice is to ensure you have ALL contact details for your card providers.
Take more than one card, from diffrent banks if possible.
Any issues talk to your bank at the time and see what they say.
S75 is not used very often with problems.

All in all. I wish you a great trip and know you will have a great time, as i know quite a few people who have been there and have a cousin who spends 6 months of each year living there.... Lucky cow escaping this weather ;)

    Cheers dalesrider.

Actually I've been before, but only to Delhi and Mumbai, and that was in April when it was nearly 40 degrees wearing a suit and on best behviour! I did love what I got to see the little I got to see - even the slums. Te kids I saw there were just playing cricket nd got so excited at the sight of a foreigner. You have to leave your western values at home though I think.
