we have just bought a little Blenheim cavalier pup! She was being run on for show but isnt quite suitable, she is five months old

My fav name is Rosie but cant have that as my daughter likes it as a possibility if she has a daughter...! So thinking of Daisy at the moment - I like 'girl' names by and large rather than, say, Honey.
Would love to hear suggestions! At the moment she is called Fennel .

The other question for now is food as am a bit worried about that - the breeder feeds a mix of raw meats from Pets are Us and biscuit. She says dried food is unquestionably poorer quality but I must admit that I would find that easier. However I suppose I would have difficulty changing the dog's diet now? First and foremost of course I want her to have a diet that will give her the best chance of a healthy life and enjoy her food and not be smelly!.

I will have lots more questions I know but am just getting into my stride! We are not having the pup till 1 March as my husband about to have a small operation.

Thanks everyone I know I will get lots of help on this forum...

First of all congratulations! Cavaliers are fantastic, my Aunt has 2 & I was thinking of getting one years back. You do realise that more important than a name would be photos? (Just so we can get ideas for the name of course lol)

I don't see why you can't have Rosie, does your Daughter still live at home? If not i'd stick to that personally. I like the names Ellie & Amber (but i'm thinking Amber won't fit the criteria)

Ah how cute I want another cavalier puppy again. Am like broody for cava puppies rather than a baby haha. I have a cavalier myself she is a Blenheim too. I called her ruby not my choice but mums but she suits it and we have a cat called milly so named after make-up brand Ruby & Milly.

I really like Daisy its a delicate little name for a delicate little dog. When I finally get another cavalier am going to call it Isabella but Izzy for short.

Most people call there cavaliers quite 'posh' names like Lady so an so.
But shorten it so like Elizabeth but call it Lizzy. I like Lily, Fleur, Amelia (Mia for short), Amber is quite nice as they have like Amber Colour patches the Blenheim cavs.

Food wise if they already on raw then i'd try and keep that in her diet. It is thought of as the best by many. I don't feed raw myself because my dog just doesn't know what to do with a raw chicken wing. I know Natures Instinct is very good for raw food. Here is a brilliant link about everything you need to know about raw.

If you just can't see yourself feeding raw then there is plently of high quality dry and wet foods. I am feeding mine on Wainwrights wet food from pets at home which is really good and not that expensive. I am trying Eden dry food which is like 80% meat and no cereals or fillers.
I found this wet food thread amazing and also the dry is great to.

Post a pic of the little cutie when you can please :)

I have a Poppy. We called her that because we picked her up on Armistice Day. She was going to be called Maggie if we picked her up the day before!

My 2 cavaliers are Millie and Lucy. I love Rosie though and think it would make a lovely name for your pup.

Mine get fed on dried complete but some brands are better than others.

thank you all so much for the names I am going to try some of them out in my head over the next few days!! I do like Poppy but am bad about shortening names and am afraid I might end up calling her Pops for short! I quite like Ellie...
But I cant take Rosie from my daughter!!

Anyway, back to food - I have to say that I do like the idea of dried but will have to give it more thought - think the breeder would be horrified. I know her poo would be easier to deal with if its dried food and going away with her etc. I will have to see what is the best of the dried food but I wonder if she would eat it?

The one thing I am worried about is that I dont want her to cliimb all over the furniture just to sit on laps when invited. My friend who has a cavalier and a dachsund enforces that without making her dogs miserable. How do other people feel about it?

My dogs sleep wherever they want to (except in my bedroom). Yes that includes on the furniture. Lucy snores if she lies flat so she normally sleeps with her head propped up on the arm of the chair. I have a leather suite though which dog hairs dont stick to obviously. I like to cuddle my dogs and the best cuddles are when we are sitting at an equal level.

I think there poo is meant to easier to clean with raw. You could always buy like chicken wings or drumsticks from supermarket occasionally and dry the rest. My dog barely eats dry its been a massive challenge and i've heard other cavalier owners saying they had murder getting them to eat biscuits. Yours might be fine though. I'd email around different companies and ask for samples first. I quite like skinners duck and rice (not sure if they do puppy) and its not expensive either.

Can't help with the training them to not go on furniture. Start early I suppose and mean it not let them on sometimes and then not others. We are soft with animals in our house the cat has scratched the leather sofa to death and it looks furry now. Dog has a lovely dog bed but sleeps on my pillow. I have a double bed but she wants to sleep on my pillow resting her paws on my head or snuggled up under blanket with me. I love it though as its like a little teddy bear in bed. Very stubborn dogs and love their comforts so its very hard to keep them off the sofa with those big heart melting eyes.
