If its gone missing at voucher processing you have more chance of finding a needle in a haystack.

The easiest way would be to get another cheque, or at least ask for one in the meantime. If the bank don't find the cheque you won't get the money from them.

OP has no chance of finding it - it's entirely the banks responsibilty IMO and down to them to sort out. As far as I can see the OP has done nothing wrong here; the bank have mislaid/lost the check; they should be sorting this out, not inconveniencing the OP,

    Sevenofnine - good post!

I suspect the problem will transpire to be that the international cheque has to be returned to the US for clearing. I believe many bank will only show cheques once they have cleared.

But that doesn't explain why the bank claim to have 'no record'. If that were the case the bank would know it was awaiting clearing, surely.
The OP should have two different balances, and her 'available' balance should be £1400 less than her account balance. Leastways, that's what my account shows when I have uncleared cheques awaiting clearing.

  • Thanks for all your responses.
Well after many phone calls this morning between myself and the branch, myself and the cheque clearing dept and the cheque clearing department and my branch. The cheque has been located. I have been putting American cheques through my account for over 10 years and have never had a problem before.
The branch told me it had been sent back to the states to clear however the dept who are responsible for sending it to the states deny any knowledge of it. However when I got home there was a letter saying the cheque has been sent away.
Now I will just have to wait 3-4 weeks to see if clears.

I do hope you are going to point out to them that those phone calls cost you and that you're not impressed, at all, with their 'service' and the amount of bother you've been put to.

My bank used to pay the customer (£25 I think) if they messed up. I had the payment twice, but not for a while;)

At the very least you should be receiving a letter of apology.

    But glad it's been found!

Glad it's been found and should work out okay now but they do need to review their procedures somewhat and, if they don't offer compensation, please ask as they should offer you something.

When my £1000 cash payment was not logged as per my earlier message, I had the inconvenience also of all the phone calls and worry over losing that amount of money. I had explained that I was going on holiday either the next day or a couple of days later and didn't want this worry when I was away and the person in the Complaints Department, who I had been passed through to, once he sorted it all out, offered to send me flowers. I like flowers but they just die so I prefer something which lasts (as hubby knows lol) so I said that I would not be happy with flowers as an apology because I was going on holiday so he offered to pay £30 into my account right away. I agreed to that and it paid for our breakfasts at the airport lol! Better than a slap on the face with a wet fish LOL! :)
