  • That cake is adorable!:j How did you shape it? Did you just cut it by hand or do you have a special cake tin?
  • I'm a perfectionist and I wasnt happy with the white part of the buttercream, couldnt get it smooth and ended up with cake crumbs back in it.

Its a special tin my mom bought it me from Amazon, it was about £10 (made by Wilton) but hopefully will be a good investment as I have three girls :) they do a castle and a carriage one as well they are very cute.

    Thanks guys :)
  • the secret is to do a thin layer of frosting allover the cake, then chill it and do a second layer.

The first coating is called a crumb coating..... i watch way too many cake tv shows!!!!

  • sometimes it also helps to chill the cake before doing the crumb coating as well.

It looks great, and more importantly it looks like it was made with love, which is all most kids want to feel no matter who made the cake or where it came from :)

Don't underestimate this, on my friend's lad's 16th birthday, my friend had got his buddies around for a surprise birthday tea (they are a really nice bunch of 16 year olds), she bakes and cooks mostly from scratch which her kids think is completely normal. When the home made cake came out, one of his friends remarked that he'd never had a home made birthday cake - this is a kid who has everything that his parents can buy for him - but nobody had every made him a cake....

I bake a lot, and having tried a lot of vanilla frosting recipes this is now my go to one:

I made this again last night for DH's birthday cake but put 3tbs of cocoa in it at the end, it was divine.
