Birthday Cake Frosting Recipe

Does anyone have a good easy recipe for a frosting for a childs birthday cake? Not sure whether to frost it or use a fondant ready made icing? Whats likely to be easier? Am ok with cake making but rubbish at decorating not arty at all so needs to be simple!:undecided

  • I bake a lot, and having tried a lot of vanilla frosting recipes this is now my go to one:

I would definitely go with butter-cream over fondant - throw a few sweets and maybe a bit of edible glitter on top et voila! :)
  • A basic butter icing recipe is 1 part butter 2 parts icing sugar eg 200g butter and 400g icing sugar. You can then add colour, flavourings etc and decorate with sprinkles and ready made decorations that most supermarkets now have a great selection of.

Or for fondant icing have you thought about a printed motif? You can get photos done or favourite cartoons, popstars printed onto rice paper that can just be stuck on. Ebay has alot of business sellers doing these now.

Hope this helps and happy baking :)

    Thanks for your help!

Would I need to make the cake and ice it on the actual day of the party? Would it go funny if did the day before?

Got to do party food for 50:eek: children on the day. Got to be as cheap as possible so far got hall for £20, a friend doing a disco for free, managed to find half price Peppa Pig Mascot £12 and brought a glitter tattoo kit for £14 off ebay and I have done my own sweetie cones as party bags tied up with left over christmas wrapping string. So cost so far for 50 children around £66.

I was going to make pizzas, sandwiches, salad sticks and dips, value crisps, mini sausages, sausage rolls, jam tarts, choc cornflake cakes and cupcakes. Which do you think I could do the day before? Limited on fridge and freezer space!:)

sounds lovely - could I suggest the addition of some fresh fruit? kids love grapes and strawberries, and for those who dont want cake it provides a sweet alternative.
  • Thanks! I did think about putting some fruit out brought a platter thing I could put it in. My kids love strawberries, raspberries, plums and grapes, will see what I can get for cheap fresh fruit is sooo expensive at the mo its where most my shopping budget goes at the moment. My 3 can eat 20 bananas in a week easily.

For my daughter's 10th birthday she wanted to bake the cupcakes with her friends. We put out different decorations after they were baked they decorated their own cupcakes themselves. Anyone that didn't want to happily played away on a dancing game in the front room.

The next morning (I was a glutton for punishment and had a sleepover)
I had pancakes but also put out some fruit. I had also got a mango and cut that up as well. Some kids had never had it before so it was a new experience for them as well. Most of them loved it!!

On the original question, as stated above for the frosting, then if you want a different colour or something add the tiniest amount of food colouring, less is more unless you want it a very strong colour.
If you are worried about decorating, get a star nozzle and piping bag, put nozzle in first, add enough frosting to only fill bag halfway(that way it is less likely to spill) roll down the top and hold it securely in the palm of your hand. Use even pressure when getting the frosting out. If you are nervous practice on wax paper first. Instead of trying to make fancy loops or anything just put a dot of frosting and next to that another dot until you have gone round the whole cake, turning the cake as you go before you know it, it will be decorated.

    Hope this helps!

I tried this frosting at the weekend, it was delicious, a great recipe, thanks.

It made the perfect amount for 12 cupcakes.

It looks great, and more importantly it looks like it was made with love, which is all most kids want to feel no matter who made the cake or where it came from :)

This thread reminded me of a "best frosting I've ever had" recipe that has been on my list of things to try for at least two years now. I almost never bake sweet things so it might be there for a while longer still! But it does look really good.
