Printer problems Help please.........

I recently installed an HP Photosmart C4480 printer which worked OK after a little advice on here.
This evening I copied selected text from an email to Word but couldn't get it to print. The printer icon says it is 'spooling'. The document is only two A4 pages of text so I can't really see why it needs to 'spool'.
I tried to cancel the print which took ages (over 15 minutes!) On further investigation the HP 'help' centre suggested turning the computer off!!! This did get rid of the spooling and I tried again with the same result.......in the meantime it wont print anything else either.......guess I'll have to switch the pc off again......
Is this printer too clever for it's own good or have I missed a vital set up task? Surely it should just print on request like my previous printers?
Any helpful suggestions please?

If you go into control panel and then into printers does it show the printer online as and set default ? If not if you right click your mouse on it you can change the settings. Another option is to uninstall the driver and reinstall it. Hope this helps.0

Benje - Yes, thank you for replying, the printer is (and was) showing as on line. Also, I could re-install the driver but now you come to mention it I remember I had to do that shortly after I installed the printer to get it to work 'properly'.
So I'm bound to ask the bigger questions
Is it a 'known' fault? Can it be solved any other way?
And
Should I be looking to revert to my old printer/buy another:eek: new one?
And
Which one can you recommend?0 -
If you re-install the printer software, you could set a restore point then.
You should be able to use that if the printer stops working later on.
If the printer continues to work, set a new restore point each week.
If you decide on a new printer, what is the budget, does it have to be an HP, will compatible inks be used?0 -
Thank you Santer Sorry I don't understand 'a restore point'
No it doesn't have to be HP, no set budget (but can't go mad either!) it would needs to be capable of good quality colour printing and will only be lightly used. I tend to use 'named' ink but am not averse to 'compatable' ink.
In the first instance I will probably get more ink for my old HP5150 deskjet which served me well & look out for a replacement in due course - hence need for recommendations.
This latest palava has put me off printing at all!:o0 -

Windows 7
If you click start, right click computer, click properties, click system protection, click create, name the restore point, then it will say if the restore point was created.
If the printer stops working, go back to system protection and then click system restore, select the restore point you created by name.0
