Credit cards in Russia?

Is it safe to use credit cards while booking the hotels and hostels in Russia directly, not via booking.com etc? I've found hostel in St.Petersburg, which I like, but they don't have online booking and ask to send them my credit card details for guarantee...is it safe?

I would be concerned giving them my card details....why can't you book via a reputable hotel booking?0

If its a credit card (and over £100) all is fine due to being protected0
