Buying land and living on it?

I've just seen these pieces of land for sale. Some say you can use them as a smallholding. Does that mean you can live on it?

For example: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-25617144.html

Is this a good investment idea nowadays? Not that I have the money though, but something to save up for, somewhere to 'put' my money?

It strikes me that the current uses fit in with 'agricultural use'.

If you were to buy one, you'd probably have trouble getting 'change of use' permission from the council, even before you consider building anything.

There's no indication of any services existing nearby. Would you want a home without electricity, water, drainage, phone line, gas?

It's not one of the areas marked for Housing Development on the local proposals map, so any application for residential use would fail at the first hurdle.

It looks like it's just intended to be used as oversized allotments with livestock.

I'm no expert but I think it unlikely that Council Planning restrictions will let someone live on a smallholding unless it already has residential status-

but I've always found local planners are very good at giving you informal advice - assuming you're in Horsham District of W Sussex, bell 'em on 01403 215187

Of course that could tip them off if they say no, and if you plan to squat on the plot with a caravan anyway, but that could be a risky tactic
  • 0.1 of an acre? thats just about 20 x20 metres. how could anyone live and have a smallholding on that size of a patch? Its a micro holding. What's the price for that tenth of an acre do you know?

It must just be the small square with the wee caravan on it that's for sale....

    blimey.

maybe there's gold or oil underneath!
  • Wasn't there some problem somewhere - try googling "Dale Farm"...

    Cheers!

Someone has tried to do it here. Needless to say the authorities have taken a dim view.

    "Off-grid" is becoming very popular.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
