Garage fee £1743 and my car is not fixed

Please can anyone help, I have a Land Rover TD5 T reg ,we had our clutch replaced, but then broke down, it was a faulty clutch , so we got towed back to the same garage, where the garage replaced it, driving our car home it was noisy near gear stick, when the gear stick was put back in the car it was forced through the side of the big block instead of central so outside noise was heard through stick, car went back again, a little while after an emergency light came on "transmition oil temperature", so I booked the car in again as there was noise near the rear tyre as well, waiting for date to come to take car to garage and the blooming engine chain had snapped on 13th October 2012 my car was taken to a local 4 x 4 dealer, the garage suggested the chain, may have not done too much damage to the engine, so advised not to get a reconditioned engine until our car has been looked at, i thought good idea while engine being looked at the noise in rear was the fuel pump, which garage replaced , they could not find how to sort out the red transmission light, engine was not damaged too much, but all together the car would not start, last week we called garage again , as the garage have had our car now for 3 1/2 months, they said all done, bill is £1740 i asked could i do a payment plan, "NO" was garage reply, I said I needed time can I pay £600 now on my credit card and as soon as funds cleared in my account I will call garage and pay balance, all agreed, husband picked up car was not happy low presure tyre, covered in thick mud, glove compartment full of mould, I drive it and it was horrible, the next day my husband took our car to another garage to be told the engine had only half power wires were being crushed bolts put back on wrong side and more, we have authorised second garage to do the work, i have just called first garage explaining what is happening he then said it would be nice to know what was wrong with it, so he wants us to pay £1740 for something he tried to fix but didnt, I am happy paying for the parts he has put on car, but he said they are £1000 plus vat, I am not happy he has my £600 let alone have to pay him more when the next garage has got to put it all right and they will want paying.
Does anyone know what I should do, the garage is not in any associations except UNIPART.
The garage have had our car 3 1/2 months we have lost our independence , which has been hard as we have 4 children to take here and there, lost the tax, insurance and mot time and even now the car is in second garage but it is booked in for next thursday this will be the day we lnow what is actually wrong with our car, any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thank you for listening
Annette

How many garages are involved here?

Get a report from the new garage detailing all the faults and issues caused by the other garage(s).

You will probably need to pay for this.

Was the chain issue anything to do with the original garage and repair though?

    Or just unlucky?

Noise from the rear tyre. I assume just another new problem. How long have you had this car? Been sold a lemon?

Find an independant LR specialist, even the TD5 disco isn't a very complex car by modern standards, but the specialist knowledge from knowing the model and parts sources can save you a load of time, money and hassle.

Probably not much help since you're already involved with two garages, but bear it in mind for the future.

  • Hi Forgotyourname
Yes we have paid the second garage but he feels sorry for us and just accepted £20, I have asked first garage(4 x 4) for itemized bill and have emailed it to second garage.
All the work done on this car has been done by the same garage(4 x 4), I said to the (4x4) garage what was happening and he said he would like to know what the faults are, this is where I am puzzled, he wanted me to pay £1740 and new he had not completed job.
The (4 x 4) did the origional clutch, replace and I said to the (4 x4) that the 2nd garage said the chain snapping could be linked to the previous work,(clutch) as the gear box brackets are on the wrong side, the 4 x 4 said it wont be his fault.
The noise from rear was the fuel pump, which garage replaced, until 2nd garage tell me faults and why I suppose I am stuck at the moment.
  • Hi Foxy Stoak
Only one garage been doing work on our car, the second garage is where the car is now we have authorised 2nd garage to investigate, I have emailed my itemized bill to 2nd garage so they can see what was or wasnt done on our car.
    Cheers Netty
  • Hi we had a Pajero before and went to Mitsibushi specialist they ripped us off by saying car fixed we would pay and then drive home to find out not repaired, so we took car back, they would say it was something else we paid and left this happened about 5 times, so to be honest I thought I could trust them, our garage also I thought was good as they said they were a 4 x 4 specialist.
If we had known about 2nd garage earlier we would deffinatly of used them but its too late now, I just hope they can link all this back to the clutch being done.

OK so 1st garage did the clutch.. Which failed again and they sorted that?

Or did the chain snap before you got it back to them to repair that?

You took it back to them to fix the clutch and the engine?

Not sure where the other unrelated faults come into it, rear wheelbearing?

Have the 2nd garage said the clutch issue caused the chain to snap? If not its unrelated and your problem.

So how long have you had the car? When was it last serviced and who did it?

  • Forgive any minor errors in this post - am on my phone and struggling to read posts fully.

Have the 2nd garage checked the rear differential transfer box for problems - this is connected to the gearbox due to the off road andsnow settings on the box itself. Disco's are quite notirious for rear diff and box problems from research I did for a friend who has one also in need of repair.

I don't know how the timing chain would related to the box/clutch fault unless it has caused unecessary strain on the engine but again this would need investigating in person by a qualified mechanic.

Have you contacted CAB or trading standards to get further advice in person hun also? When my hubby had his business ( MOT station and vehicle repairs ), he did a few independant reports on behalf of the local trading standards office for people in situations similar to yourself.

Off the top of my head from your first post are you being charged for clutch ( x 2 although unless you had driven very irattically riding the clucch etc in first 200 miles or so then it is likely either a manurfacturer defect or fitting issue unless they have not fitted a 3 piece clutch kit and the problem was within the diapragm or flywheel ), timing chain kit, head gasket replacement, head skim and valves etc associated with any top end damage done by chain snapping ), fuel pump replacement and a few small bits? And obviously labour on top?

Really hope that you can get it sorted - have you now paid the 1st garage the £600 off your credit card? xxx

Discovery 3 sometimes has differential problems, but they are rare on D1 and D2 unless fitted with large tyres and abused off road. (I'm talking about real problems, not pinion oil seal leaks).

Gearbox problems aren't unknown with the main gearbox, but the transfer box in a D2 is pretty bombproof.
