Egg card PPI - help please?

Hi there - I took out a Egg credit card in Nov 2007 and following all of the good advice on MSE, thought I'd try to reclaim PPI on this and other credit cards. I wrote to Canada Square Operations (who now manage Egg) using the template letter to request details of my original CC agreement on 15th Jan and enclosed a cheque for £10. I received a letter back on the 5th Feb (dated 17th Jan) to say that they're not legally obliged to comply with the information requests under the consumer credit act, because the account is now closed (i.e. we no longer have a contractual relationship). They also state that the right to be provided with information ended with the closure of the account.
They then go on to state that as they have not fulfilled my request, the cheque has been securely destroyed, when in fact they have cashed it a week or so ago!!!
Can I still claim if I'm unsure of the details? Thanks for any help...
