It depends on your circumstances, need a bit more info, eg, how old are you, how long have you been out of work, what's your previous work history like?
  • I was asking if you mean whether you need to have had experience of working or whether you must attend work experience to receive JSA.If you are mandated to attend work experience then yes, it is and you can be sanctioned for not attending.

If it is voluntary then no, it is not mandatory.

Cant really say it better than that, your advisor will tell you if it is mandatory and you should receive a letter explaining it.

I ask what context as I wondered if you had a specific example you would like comments on.

You'll need to clarify your question if you want an accurate answer, as in its current form it is open to interpretation.

You could mean "In order to claim JSA is it necessary that I have some work experience?"

Or you could mean "When I am claiming JSA will I get sent to complete a work experience assignment?"

There are a number of other interpretations too, and you'll need to be clear which question it is you are asking if you want a clear answer.

    Nonsense in = nonsense out.

  • I fall in the 18-24 group I think it is if you have been on JSA for 9 months is that correct?

You will be referred to the Work programme after 9 months if you are 18-24, but that won't necessarily mean you will have to do mandatory work experience, it all depends on your WP provider.

I think you are getting confused with the previous Community Task Force scheme which 18-24 year olds had to take part in after 9 months claiming JSA. This was abolished a couple of years ago.
  • Thanks for replying back.

I just don't want to be chucked on "work experience" for 30 hours a week for £1.87 an hour.
  • Not sure where you get those figues from but from my experience all candidates that have had work experience have found it worthwhile with many finding employment as a direct result of the contacts they made, skills they learnt or the confidence/change in attitude it gave them. Dont write it off because of bad press or a 'can't be bothered. attitude (not saying you have but many do).
  • "Those figures" were quoted on that recent programme "Growing Up Poor" where the Scottish lass was working in a shop for 30 hours a week and being paid £55 (which actually equates to £1.83 per hour).

I have no idea how this is legal and it makes a complete mockery of the minimum wage.
