Hello all,
I wonder if you could help. I made some fairy cakes yesterday and I normally use Vitalite as the butter/marg and they turn out fine.
Yesterday, though I used Flora (bought on offer worked out cheaper than vitalite)
Anyway they turned out with burnt bits on, now that might have been my fault
but the underneath were nasty and greasy :eek: I think they might be going in the bin, which is a shame but wondered if the greasy bit was down to the Flora and it being the wrong sort of marg to use?

Usually it says on the side if something is okay to use - there's a tick system for baking, roasting etc. Have a look and see what it says.
Personally I wouldn't use flora even to oil the trays though no matter how cheap it was
I think sunflower marges are supposed to be good for baking and have fewer transfats etc?? This is a dim memory tho since I only use butter these days (tesco value at 53p for 250g)0 -

I use flora light for my cooking and baking. I don't get burnt bits but occasionally it is slightly greasy on the bottom if using paper cup cakes etc.
This week I bought an olive oil spread that is suitable for baking and have noticed the usual cake mix isn't nearly as "sloppy" as with flora.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
I have yucky memories of having to use flora as a child (this was in the days when marg was meant to be healthier than butter) - flora on toast is vile imho. Though maybe I should buy some now that I think of it to stop myself eating toast and thus moneysave by not having to buy bigger clothes - a real possibility at the moment:o0

Flora is margarine, and contains hydrogenated vegetable oils, which have been revealed recently to cause heart disease & cancer. God knows why they have such a healthy image, they are nothing of the sort.
Imagine axle grease that has been dyed yellow, and that's what you're eating. Doesn't sound so appetising now does it?
They are also known as Trans-Fats. Take a look at this:

that might be because it was the 'light' version? I have baked loads of times with flora.0
