If you absolutely must get one from China, be aware you MAY need to get it remade anyway in the UK.

On the sewing forum I go on some of the professional dressmakers are refusing to take on dresses from China. One of the complaints is that they use such small seam allowances it mean there is no extra fabric to use if they need to make alterations. I know one dressmaker who said it was taking her so long to try and make something of the dresses that it was taking her almost as long as making a dress from scratch. Unfortunately the clients aren't expecting to have to pay for that much work.
  • thanks all, fussy daughter just HAD to have a certain dress on ebay from China, I warned her it may look nothing like the picture, it may not fit properly etc etc, but she would be happy with nothing else and it wasn't very expensive, so I ordered last night. Will now have to wait and see!
  • My niece was really lucky. She ordered her wedding dress from China and it was perfect. She also ordered bridesmaid dresses which came in the wrong colour. After several emails they agreed to make the dresses in the correct colour. They arrived in time for the wedding and we were even allowed to keep the other ones at no extra cost. She also didn't have to pay postage.

Bargain Betty's post no 2 has given you a link to check the tax and duty. There is also a charge of 8 to about 15 Pounds according to the carrier for customs clearance. It is possible that it may arrive without being charged.

The above advice suggests you are likely to be disappointed, if not by surprise taxes, by the poor quality of the items themselves.

Where the likely risk is much bigger then the likely benefit, the answer is usually not to proceed.

Off the peg Chinese clothing tends to be VERY small as well. I have a stick thin, size 6 16 year old who is a perfect China size large! It's mad.

That is considered large in China ;)
I'm Chinese and unfortunately have a very unconventional 32GG bust, as well as a size 10/12 body. I am considered practically obese in China, so whenever I go back my size 6 sister happily buys clothes and I just stand around looking like a numpty because they don't sell my size!
Undergrad law student. Take my advice with a pinch of salt! :rotfl:

She's very tall as well so everything is short on her.

I know, I was wondering 'how' this charge is taken. It's ok. I've done further investigations and found out.
