Slow cooker disasters

  • My slow cooker was given to me by my aunty for a wedding present, we have now had it just over 15 years and it is still going strong. I cook everything on low, never use the high, never had a problem of things being overcooked, everything turns out perfect. Saying that, I don't use it as much as I could use it. I tend to use it for things like casseroles, bolognaise, chilli, that type of thing.
  • I never registered the product for manufacturers warranty - does this matter? It was bought fore as a gift Christmas 2011.

I bought my first ever slow cooker just before Christmas.

The first time I used it, it took ages to warm up and probably around 4 hours on Low to cook the casserole. I did fill it about 3/4 full.

The second time, I heard a strange plopping noise and realised that it had got hot very quickly on Low. It was around half full this time. It cooked the meal very quickly. It did the same thing the third time I used it.

I still don't understand whether it is faulty or not: many other people say it is because it is modern. So why did Low work the first time?

This would be because there was less food in it the second time, so it reached its maximum temp more quickly.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • I think it was Queenie, a few years ago, who gave an explanation of different heats in slow cookers. I think she said that old slow cookers cooked at a lower temp but modern ones (because of food safety) cooked at higher temps.

Oh dear! are you putting enough liquid in to cover the food?
On high for the first hour and then on low for the rest of the day?

I have x2 slow cookers. The small 1.5 and the 3 litre one.
Both are on today for some batch cooking.
The small one has chopped veg and knorr veg stock pt with 500ml of boiling water.(vegetarian)
The 3 litre the same veg, diced beef and x2 knorr beef stock pots and 2x 500ml of boiling water.
For the last hour I will be turning up to high again and adding suit dumplings.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)
  • I might sack it off and just set the oven to come on at a set time!!
