Slow cooker disasters

Hi,

I've been trying to meal plan, and today's recipe was Chicken with sweet potato and rosemary pasta sauce, done on low for 8 hours in the slow cooker.

I've had my slow cooker just over 12 months, but lately it's started burning everything! I've come back from work to find the SC dry, not completely charcoal ed, but not edible.

It's a Breville 4.5 litre one I think. Anyone else had similar problems? Can anyone recommend a decent slow cooker that won't cost the earth?!

This has happened so many times now, I get in from work, and wonder what the point in getting up early to sort out the SC was for and end up devastated.

Thanks, and apologies in advance if this is a repeated post.

We have found that the newer large Slow Cookers with more than one heat setting tend to run hotter than the older one setting ones do.

We got arround the problem by buying an older type at a carboot sale.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I'm afraid it's all not as it appears, I recently started cooking sous-vide and decided to adapt my slow-cooker. Regardless of the setting you use it will still reach the same temperature it's just that the low setting will take longer to get there, mine reaches 97degC , think about It from a food safety perspective and they will all have to get hot enough to kill bacteria regardless of the setting which will be around 70-80deg C , if the low/med/high setting affected temperature somebody would have made digital ones where you can dial In the precise temp you require , selling a device that would cause food poisoning wouldn't be good from a marketing perspective
  • I bought my first ever slow cooker just before Christmas.

The first time I used it, it took ages to warm up and probably around 4 hours on Low to cook the casserole. I did fill it about 3/4 full.

The second time, I heard a strange plopping noise and realised that it had got hot very quickly on Low. It was around half full this time. It cooked the meal very quickly. It did the same thing the third time I used it.

I still don't understand whether it is faulty or not: many other people say it is because it is modern. So why did Low work the first time?

  • I just bought a sloe cooker, the green pea soup I made in it was a disaster, the peas were not cooked after being on all day. I had to finish it off in my pressure cooker.

    I am not impressed!!

I have Breville but low on mine is just a keep warm facility, not for actually cooking the food. Believe this is different on other makes, though.

  • I have a really basic Tesco one too and I love it! I cook so many different meals in it and cook most things on high, never had a problem with things being overcooked. I have never made anyone ill with my slow cooker either and have used one for about 15 years. It sounds to me like yours is faulty.

Slow cookers are my pet hate. Vile machines that produce vile food. I prefer to cook.
  • I do not like slow cookies. Anyway you should contact manufacturer.
