The questions do not need to be voluntary, the only criteria is that the employer should not base their decision on a protected characteristic.

An employer will not care about your "technical" interpretation. If they have 100 applications for a job and see someone giving stupid answers (and that is what they are), they'll bin the application. If you ask why, they'll say someone was better qualified.

stupid? maybe incorrect but hardly stupid or why would the option to choose a stupid answer be on the form.

not really as the info on diversity can not be used in the application process.

Should not be used, but may well be. The OP would not be able to prove otherwise.

No, can't imagine why!! The fields were pre-poulated when you got to that page, they seem to be pre-empting stupidity by your reckoning.

Surely if this country REALLY isn't racist, then there is no actual need to put "Ethnic diversity" questions on an application because its simply unneccessary. What is the point of it? What do they do with the information.

If, as is sometimes stated, they like to make sure we have a "diverse ethnic workplace" (or, more truthfully "we like to ensure we can't be called racists"), then do that by hiring the best person for the job. If the company who is employing suddenly thinks (for example) "Oh, we haven't got enough Indians working here", and they employ the next Indian who applies, then that is DISCRIMINATING against all the other employees on the basis of race, i.e. that they were NOT Indians.

Leave this damn awful question off applications, by trying to not be racist it is actually ENCOURAGING racist discrimination.
