Free Text from a Landline

Are BT the only fixed landline phone company that do not charge for sending and receiving text messages?

NO I AM NOT HAVING ANY ONES MOBILE JUST TO SEND ONE OR TWO MESSAGES ON SOME DAYS

  • I pretty sure that BT charge for sending texts. Receiving is free as you would expect, however you don't get the sending number to identify the source of the message unless you pay for caller id. The free caller id doesn't work because it just sends a BT mobile number rather than the real one.

There is a 'free' allowance of texts included in BT's Anytime and Evening & Weekend packages. As far as I know, no other provider offers this.

You have to have display of calling line identity to receive texts as text. This is also included 'free' as 'BT privacy'. (This is because the technology that sends you the text is a side-benefit of the technology that transmits the calling number.)
If you don't have display of calling line identity, a (quite clever) robot will convert incoming texts to speech - unless you can figure out how to switch off this service.
Useful tip: if you start an outgoing BT text with
    *0#
the system will send you a report when it has delivered the text - or tell you if has failed to do so.
