Can I run a smart bluray player through a standard monitor?

I've got a Panasonic blu ray player:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-DMP-BDT220EB-Network-Blu-ray-Player/dp/B0079WS464/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1360162881&sr=8-3

and a standard LG monitor:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-ELECTRONICS-E2251VR-BN-E2251VR-Monitor/dp/B005JRIP4M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1360163026&sr=8-3

Until I can afford a nice Samsung tv, I tried connecting the blu ray to the monitor, via HDMI cables Nothing showed up on the monitor, just the normal Windows desktop. So I couldn't "set-up" the blu ray for wi-fi, etc like you would do with a TV.

I did still have the analog connectors also connected from my XP pc, so was that the problem? Or is it not possible to connect and run these two things?

I thought I'd just ask this question before I go upstairs and unbox and connect the bloody thing up again??!!

Thanks guys.

Have you tried reading the manual? :)
  • Sorted it, thank you. God, I feel old!

All done, but no audio on the blu ray disc. I suspect my low-spec system doesn't support 7.1 DTS. Is there any way I can check this?

How do you have it connected?

How do you have it connected?

The blu ray has external audio sockets, my pc has audio sockets - nothing is in either! Duh.

My only existing connection is HDMI - to HDMI

The blu ray supports standard red/black leads, the pc green/purple?

Tried all my old cables, but nothing happening.

I'll figure it out, Tanglefoot. Thanks very much for your help.

By default as you have it connected via HDMI the sound will use that connection but if you have it to a monitor I guess that is a DVI connection and that does not pass audio.

You will need to switch the hdmi audio to off and that will send the audio out of the other connections on the back - page 27 of the manual ;)

    DMP-BDT220 outputs: PC inputs:
    • Line-in (light blue; analogue)
    • Optical-in (digital; rare)
    • HDMI-in (digital; rare)
  • I knew it would be a dumbass solution! The dumbass being me!

Someone suggested changing the external speakers output from the green socket on the front of my pc, to the headphone output socket on the monitor. Now every audio option works!

I have to use front socket for normal pc work and back socket for blu ray, but it was only a tempory measure until I can buy my new tv. So I can live with that.

Thank you for all the helpful input from everybody.
