Awaiting ATOS interview and new condition diagnosed.....

(I would have asked this on the ATOS thread...but firstly I am not sure if the ATOS rep would deem this worthy of his attention - he seems rather selective in which questions he answers - and also I think I'll get a more balanced view by asking regular posters!:))

As you may know from previous posts I am awaiting my ATOS Interview - it has been rescheduled as a home visit for later this month.

The medical questionnaire was sent off before Christmas, and the information was up-to-date when sent off.

I have a number of medical conditions, most of which are connected to my ASD.

However, some months ago I was referred to the hospital as an outpatient (which was mentioned in my questionnaire). Then, in January I became very ill and a visit to the GP ended up with my being admitted to hospital for a couple of days. After leaving the hospital I was given an appointment for a skin biopsy, the results of which have now come back.

The biopsy results have confirmed that I have a physical condition which whilst incurable can be managed to an extent, with medication (as I don't rattle enough with the meds I take!). Even with the medication there is the possibility of flare-ups which will always result in a hospital stay.

So, my query is - when the ATOS examiner comes to see me, do I mention the new condition to them? Or should I contact ATOS before then?......or, as the condition is one that has only recently been diagnosed, will they refuse to take it into consideration? Do they only consider conditions that were known at the time of application/completing the questionnaire?

It might not hurt to discuss it but do concentrate on the answers from your ESA50 and don't get dragged into medical talk - particularly if this new condition is manageable and not normally something you would need to give up work for.

The medical asessment is supposed to determine your condition as of the examination date.
If you have developed new conditions, tell them about this, if you believe it's relevant.
In general, with few exceptions, conditions are irrelevant - all that's important are symptoms, and their impact on the descriptors.

If, for example, the condition will not affect your work, perhaps with the employer doing reasonable adjustments it is basically irrelevant.
Concentrate on the specific areas which are most likely to qualify you - do not mention irrelevant conditions other than in passing.
    _HOWEVER_.
Read and think about the descriptors carefully.
Would a reasonable impartial person following you around 24*7 for a week be able to present a reasonable case that others applied to you?
  • Thank you both for your replies.

My GP and my Mental Health Specialist both believe I should meet the support group criteria on mental health grounds.

Even without the newly diagnosed condition, I would be unable to work.

I am just trying to ensure that I have as much relevant information for the examiner, but do not want to include anything that is irrelevant.
