Internet via laptop

Just a quick question, I have purchased a laptop and am awaiting delivery. The laptop is for use at home so whilst other half uses desktop for his footie game I can get on with my coursework and access the internet. I currently use AOL, does this mean I have to use the AOL software on my laptop or can I just use internet explorer via the wired connection?

Sorry if my question doesn't make much sense.

Yes I have got a netgear wireless modem router. Does that mean I can use my internet connection without AOLs software on laptop?

    Thanks in advance

Yes, no need to install the AOL bloatware on either PC. The router makes the connection to AOL and your PC's simply connects to your router, either via an Ethernet cable or wireless.
