Awaiting Diagnosis ... planning for worst

Hi all.
I'm new here, but have been a MSE fan for years :) I have been having a lot of health problems recently generally feeling unwell and it has got progressively worse .. any way I won't bore you with the details, the upshot is I'm 33 years old, with 3 young children and am awaiting to find out whether I have Leukemia. Anyway I need to know about Parental responsibility orders ... My Wife (same sex couple) has no parental rights over our children currently - they were born before we got together and Bio Dad has always wanted to be involved and is on the Birth Cert. No issues regarding my Wife having PR on his behalf. I have looked and it is £200!!! on the Justuce website is this right??? Any tips appreciated.

I have no idea! Would it be cheaper for you and your wife to adopt the children? If dad is ok with it I think that gives best legal protection - but I'm in Scotland and our systems are different.

I wish you all the best, cancer isn't a death sentence and there's lots of support out there if that is your diagnosis but do try to not get too down before you know for sure.

I don't know if you are right about the cost, but I would say it was money well spent in your circumstances. Maybe think of it as £20 a month for less than a year. Well worth it. Have you got anything you could sell to raise the cash.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
  • I'm not sure that PR costs anything at all - you need to complete form PRA1. The £200 figure would be if a court order was needed, if the parties could not reach an agreement.

Adoption is definitely not suitable as the father would lose PR.

KaiJazz, I hope that you are able to get this sorted out for your peace of mind. It is no bad thing to do even if, as I sincerely hope, this turns out to be a 'false alarm' for you.

On another depressing topic - make a will. NOW.
Even a really basic statement of your intents, witnessed by two independant people is valid, and may avoid some issues.
A pre-made will from one of the many cheap will-writing services would be a good step, as would actually consulting a solicitor.
    Are you actually civil partners?

If there are children involved, you both should have wills, especially if the children are not your biological children, or you are not married/civil partners.
