40% increase in childcare cost

My daughter goes 3 days a week to a private nursery run by the school I work at. I have also paid a deposit for my baby to go there after I return from my current maternity leave.

We have been told today that children that attend part time are having a 39% increase in childcare costs and that we will have to pay an additional £2.50 a day for food. Full timers have also had their pay increased but by less and food is still included.

The original paper work we signed up to when my daughter started 2.5 years ago said that all food would be supplied by the nursery.

I don't know how we will be able to afford this and from my first look at the figures it seems I will be better off not working than paying the increased fees for my two children.

Is there anything I can do about this. Feeling very upset this morning

  • I would discuss it with them. My initial thinking is one of error ...

    1) Is the information you have correct? (is it a mistake: 3.9% would be normal)
    2) If so, why such an increase? (are you paying realistic fees now, or super cheap)
    3) You can't afford it and could they see if there's anything they can do please or you will need to reconsider childcare.

I'm also wondering if your school might be able to help in any way ...
  • its going from £34/day to £47.50 per day! I'm not great at maths but thats def not 3% :(

Have they taken your 15 free hours off of the bill (if your child is old enough0?

  • The bill for the extra food would be £41.50, so they have increased it by £6 per day(technically, which would still be just under a 20% increase. )
How much would a full day be before the increase, and what would it be now, this may give you a idea if the increases are consistent.
  • full timers daily rate is going up to £38/day (they don't have to pay extra for food even though they'll be eating more) is that what you meant. the 15 free hours we were using so we could afford to keep oldest in nursery part time while I was on maternity leave to keep her place open

its going from £34/day to £47.50 per day(quote)

OP I assume your child is p/t. at £34 per day but is going up to £47 p/d
BUT you say F/T is going up to £38 per day.

It doesn't seem right or maybe its me not reading it properly
  • Children who go 5 days a week will be paying £38 a day

My daughter goes 3 days a week and we will be paying £47.50 per day.

That seems particularly unfair. Are they trying to get rid of the part-timers?

  • Its funny you should say that. I currently have union involvement with work over them making life very difficult for part time staff...

I'd be pig awkward and put her in full time. Raise the extra £40 a week by offering child minding for other p/t parents!!!
