Meetup Groups

Hi there

Hopefully I have posted in correct place, and wondered if anyone can give me ideas for events for meetup group that I will be the Organiser of.

So far I have thought of the following

Pub Quiz Nights
Dancing
General pub meetups
Meals out
Badmington night
Aqua Aerobics
Country walks and Cycling in the summer

I plan to setup a facebook page with group and make up a A5 leaflet that can be put in notice boards, and perhaps some business cards to hand out.

Any other good ideas for marketing.

This is an existing group that I am taking over the running of, but membership is quite low at the moment, so I want to get more people.

If your were joining a meetup group to make new friends, because you have moved to a new area or circumstances have changed, what activities would you like to see.

The area is West Berkshire

Thanks in advance for any advise.

  • What's the actual purpose of the group? Just a general social group for the particular area to encourage a community spirit/social interaction?

Apologies, it's just a little hard to give advice unless one knows what the group is. (I wouldn't suggest a run for charity for a group of OAPs for example!)

If it is the above, then yes all of what you've suggested sounds great. I guess you would also have to take into account everyones financial circumstances. For example would you charge a monthly group fee and then finance all outings from that money, or would you charge per event only? If I was looking to join a social group this would be high on my consideration list if money were tight.

Also how about a coffee morning/bring your own cake event - you could get everyone to bring a cake, organise some teas and coffees, perhaps even get someone to teach their hobby to the group once a month (sort of like show and tell but for adults and could be good fun!)

  • Sorry also to add if you are just taking over the group it could be a good idea to introduce yourself by doing a round robin email to group members in order to ask for their views on upcoming events - that way everyone feels like they are being involved?

Thank you so much for your advice. It is a social group aimed at 30's, 40's and 50's, for people to be able to meet new people and try new things. At the moment there is mixture of couples and singles, but the single people don't show up to many events, although the pub quiz events seem quite popular.

There is a subscription fee of £6.00 for 6 months. The aim is to have a variety of events that don't cost too much money. Meals out are usually at one of the chains with offers on etc.

I love the idea of the cake evening and learning new hobby's. I will also hold a Wii Games Night and in the summer some BBQ's with bring a dish and board game nights.

At the moment is it a case of trying to get more people involved and existing members participating in activities.

I originallly joined the group as I moved to the area from London and wanted to make new friends, and I have made a few, so would like it to continue.

    Thanks again.

Cinema trips (maybe theatre on occasion though looking a little more expensive then)
    Walks/cycles
    Art galleries/museums/local attractions
Classes - this could be something to 'learn a new skill' or just a one off for a bit of fun, eg a cocktail making class or a life drawing one.
Also look for events in the local area
