Fair to ask for a refund?

I would like some opinions/advice please. Last month I signed up for some evening exercise classes through the local college but, due to ill health, I have been unable to attend any of them. I know it is not the colleges fault but would it be fair to call them and ask for a refund? Would provinding evidence from the Dr mean they have to refund me? I am aware that I may well have taken up a space that someone else could have used so am not expecting anything.

Did you sign an agreement .

You should maybe look at the terms and conditions of any documents you have.

Maybe they could be deferred to a time when you are well enough to attend if you cant have a refund.

  • Thank you for your reply McKneff.

I did not sign an agreement but the adult learning course brochure does state that refunds will only be given if a course is cancelled, not if you choose to withdraw from it (not that I really chose to).

I have sent them an email so will just keep my fingers crossed and see what happens!

No unfortunately the law doesn't entitle you to a refund in this instance, even with a doctors note.

Still no harm in asking though and appealing to their good nature - failing that ask if you could partake in the course when it starts again? Even failing that, a discount on a future course? Again, all good will gestures you could ask for, but not necessarily entitled to.

    Good advice from Arcon there.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

  • Asking nicely as you are doing often brings better results than demanding.

It's a bit like the "I know my rights" brigade who storm into shops demanding something that they have no right to in the first place, and their attitude often guarantees that the staff will not do anything to help them.

I've occasionally been overweight with airline baggage, and by simply being contrite, I've never once been charged for the extra.

I completely agree with you and it makes me cringe when I see/hear people behaving like that. I totally understand that people often have a reason for being upset and wanting refunds etc, but whoever coined the term 'the customer is allways right' needs to be poked with a sharp stick! (I used to work in retail if you haven't already guessed ):rotfl:

Will let you all know how I get on :)
  • Great news! I have received a letter from the college today and they are going to give me a full refund for the course :j:j:j
