From April 2013 anyone of working age and claiming benefits will start to be automatically moved on to claiming Universal Credit. It is initially being rolled out to parts of Oldham, Tameside, Warrington and Wigan. These are to be known as ‘PathFinder’ areas; they will thoroughly test the system so that when it goes nationwide, teething problems have been ironed out. I come under this so would it be better for me to close my isa ??

As a general point - If you spend savings specifically to get around means tests on benefit - you may be counted as still having those savings.
  • I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a limit to how much working tax credit you can get under the new system or would that be limited under the new system as well as one of my friend who has got a large family and he works full time as tesco and gets a bit of help with the rent as well and they are scared about the new system coming in april. They were wanting to know if the workiing family would get effected as well or is it just the people who are in jobseekers or income support.
If it ever got to the point where i have no money to eat. I would go to the police station and break something to get myself arrested. Atleast i would get a warm cell and food and if everyone who get SANCTIONED by the job center did that than the government would have to change there policy about sanctioning so many people on the work program.

It's likely he'd get more under UC. In fact I'd say it was fairly certain for anyone in work claiming HB/LHA plus tax credits.
  • Yes it will be.

It will have the same limits as other means tested benefits of 6 - 16K with a taper between those values.

so does this mean they wont count savings under 6k?

If by hammered you mean supporting yourself instead the state doing so, then probably.

Working Tax Credit won't exist under the new scheme: it will just be Universal Credit.

Universal Credit will replace the benefits currently known as: Child Tax Credits; Working Tax Credits; Income Support; income based JSA; income based ESA; housing and will be one payment.

The aim of Universal Credit is to get the income based welfare claimants of working age, to do more to keep themsleves and their families: "making work pay". As long as your friend works at least 35 per week at tescos, he will fulfill his conditionality under UC. The age of the youngest child or disabilities, will depend what his wife is expected to do (unless your friend earns her expected income share). At the moment, there is no limit to the number of children they can claim for.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
