This is where the cash is going.

Friends son has been out of work for about 8 weeks and is setting up his own business as a s/e builder, the job centre have helped him via the enterprise allowance scheme and he getting a 26 week run on on his JSA and a £1000 loan. He had his last meeting today at the job centre and the lady mentioned a back to work grant of £100 but he would need to go see her colleague in Remploy, he went and was asked if he was disabled, no he's not, so the lady said that he must be suffering from stress since he was trying to set up on his own so she will grant him the £100. Now I'm not the most savvy about benefits but surely it's got to be harder than this to get your hands on the cash, surely the advisor has to follow procedures or make sure the applicant actually qualifies?

  • Don't believe everything your friends tell you - there is no need to be disabled in order to qualify for the Job Grant, but the claimant must have been out of work for 26 weeks.

The only other possibility I can think of is that Remploy actually pay this money themselves. Given the rewards they receive for getting a claimant into work, this seems quite likely.

This might be better posted in discussion time, I'm not sure it's allowed here as this says from the sticky at the top of the page,

Its about helping people get their entitlement! Not about benefits policy!

This board is here for help and support for those on or looking to claim benefits, not for judgement.

So Remploy give him £100, he signs for it and then they claim that they have found him work? Sounds like a scam to me, what about the fact he's been getting all his back to work advice and self employment advice via the job centre. Surely there is some cross checking to ensure only 1 department is claiming credit for getting him into work.

Welcome to the Work Programme! ;) If my assumption is correct, this has been going along for a long time, although most reported cases have related to A4E, another provider.

Not quite true, but then most anti-benefit rants aren't:

"a weekly allowance worth £1,274 over 26 weeks, paid at £65 a week for the first 13 weeks and £33 a week for a further 13 weeks"

    http://www.dwp.gov.uk/adviser/updates/new-enterprise-allowance/

The loan is also subject to status, not everyone will qualify.

This is a board for discussing entitlement to benefits.
It is not for discussing benefits policy.

    Yes.

A4e and others have been at it for years.

Not forgetting that the £1.5 million she received is on top of the £8.6 million she received the year before, all from taxpayers' money.
