I recently recieved a letter from the council, notifying me that I owed them nearly £2000 in overpayed housing benefits from 2003 - 2004. This is the first I have heard of it and not really sure where I stand with having to repay it when its been nearly 10 years without it have ever being mentioned??? Any kind of advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Ask for a breakdown of the overpayment to be sure whether you owe it or not.
Whilst the LA could not pursue such an old debt through the courts, they can make deductions from your existing (or future) benefit entitlement.0 -

There should be a breakdown with it showing the weeks you were overpaid, what you got and what you should have gotten.0
