I've just been thinking, if daddy-bear has to cancel due to the loss of a close relative, wouldn't he be able to claim back the whole cost of the holiday anyway as he is the lead name on the booking?
That certainly sounds plausible. It would be interesting to know the facts.Even if the family policy will only pay out for daddy-bear, mummy-bear and baby-bear, this would then mean that the holiday is cancelled for reasons outside of the control of teen-bear, wouldn't he then be able to claim his share back from his own policy?
"Disinclination to travel" is normally excluded. I think your first argument is better.0 -

OK I understand, but I was thinking more along the lines that if 3/4 of the party have to cancel, then this would cause a significant increase in costs for the one remaining member, would this be considered?
Anyway, it looks like it's now become more of an academic exercise as I've found a provider (Columbus Direct) that will cover 18-22 year olds in full time education, as part of a family policy. It's slightly dearer than the two Virgin policies but is still a reasonable price with a lower excess than Virgin and a cancellation payout limit that will cover the total cost of the holiday on a single policy.
Thanks again.0 -
I just wanted to say I came onto the forum to find exactly the information you have been speaking about. I have a 19 year old son who will be coming on holiday with us later this year and I was trying to work out how to fit him into our travel insurance. I will investigate the Columbus insurance thanks to your homework.0
