Does cheque clearing still work the way it used to ?

I know that many moons ago when you paid a cheque into your account the cheque went back to a clearing centre to be exchanged with other cheques, but does this still happen today.
For example I paid a Barclays cheque into my Lloyds account this morning, so will that cheque still go back to Barlcays or is it done electronically now ?.
I remember when you used to get your bank statement you got back all the cheques you had written !.

Are you able to answer the OPs question at all?0 -
I am sorry if you took offence. The question has clearly already been fully answered by the presentation kindly posted stclair.jackjones01 wrote: »Are you able to answer the OPs question at all?
Since, after watching the video, the OP clearly has all the necessary information (imho), I thought I would make a wee joke as the video, though informative, did make me laugh!
I thought I should share the joke for the benefit of all
Sorry if you were not able to understand that!
I hope that stclair did not get upset as well as I really meant no harm

OP.
Nothing has changed in all the years. Although timescales have got tighter.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
Nothing has changed.
At this very moment there are a load of TNT/G4S/DHL/UPS trucks bombing around the road network delivering today's millions of cheques to one of a few processing sites.
When I was working in the field a few years ago there were talks around making the data exchange electronic - but to this day it still involves the physical handover of millions of cheques from bank to bank. No wonder banks hate the things. The biggest cheque clearing plant is shared by a few of the biggest clearing banks, and is unsurprisingly slap in the middle of the country - and it's very noisy.0
