Oh what a mess!

renouncing turkish dual is something i have already investigated. it is illegal after the age of 35 there so i am stuffed on that front. of course nobody told me this until after i had turned 40!!
That doesn't sound right to be honest. Could be me but it just feels wrong. Would that mean that if Turkey went to war with the UK that you could be drafted into the Turkish armed forces and the Uk ones? What would happen is you would declare yourself solely British (or whatever, I'm not going to get into a discussion on national identity I'm just doing a thought experiment). Who did you speak to about it? The Turkish authorities or the UK ones. I'm sure the home office would have no issues with it after all if you are a FULL uk citizen right now it would be no extra burden for them and would remove any ties to abroad.
Most odd.
Sorry if I'm wrong but just sounds a little odd to me, sorry.0 -
dad died in 94 and never told me re this - i lived there from 03-06. first thing i was know was being arrested in 05 and jailed. got stay of execution and skipped b4 rearrest.
Can go back whenever i want now since they have no record of link between old name and new (new passport etc). but MUST keep head down to make sure they never make that link.
have to return so that my boy can see his grandparents and wife can see her family every year. Am happy to do this but not with my old (very turkish) name or any link to it.0 -
spoke to turkish govt and this is their position. also spoke to HO and they agreed to provide official doc to prove dual with UK.
Done and given to turkish govt. in 05 - they say it does not matter since i am over the age limit of 35 for amendment (since the error was made at birth) and have been technically an AWOL deserter since the age of 18!!!
lawyers (in both countries) said name change and new passport was best and only option - plus most practical.
UK army not a problem - already served from 85-88 as a pro!0 -
already spoke to lawyers there re this and it is not an option in my case because my dad registered me as full turk when i was born - with NO record of dual. i knew nothing of this until i moved there just b4 turning 40. i can wave my uk passport until i am blue in the face but their records say no and i cannot change them to dual and then renounce because this was done AT BIRTH. in other words the turkish govt has NEVER had a record of dual since birth so i cannot change in order to renounce.
pretty bad huh?
But that would only matter in Turkey surely. If the UK government has you listed as a FULL UK citizen with no dual aspect to your nationality (by their records... not just a passport holder but a full citizen) then they would not allow extradition for national service in another country (in fact if the documents I read are true them seeking extradition in this country is a perfect time to say to the British government that you renounce Turkish nationality. It is one way for me to lose my US nationaility certainly). IN FACT if the UK government officially recognises you as solely a UK citizen then you should be allowed to travel to Turkey without problems as you will be under the protection of the British Embassy.
But I'm probably wrong, utterly wrong... wrong wrong wrong...
Sorry.0 -
i know it sounds odd - but according to turkish govt my case is pretty much unique. However, amending the rules would create (they think) a dangerous precedent and is not something they would ever entertain a possibility of.
They made that VERY clear!!!
Army is VERY powerful in turkey0 -
It wouldn't hurt to get some free legal advice though, just to be absolutely clear there is no way you can settle this whole mess.:: BCSC #71 but now discharged! ::0
-
that is the rub - the UK govt has me listed as dual.
because it has been so long and the turks have not amended they are not having it and cannot be convinced to bring their records in line.
i am in the worst of all possible places here - have been going thru this legally for 2 yrs in both countries.
believe me - the new ID is working well - just want to keep head down!!0 -
the consulate offers no protection in this case - already checked many times over. if they catch me with the new name then i serve and HM govt will not intervene - EVEN if it involves extradition from the UK. Off the record - they said that my lawyers said that the new ID was the best option too!!!! which shocked me to say the least!!!!
So you can see why, even if i was squeaky clean AAAAA++++++ credit rated, i am VERY VERY nervous about any paper trails to my old ID. Credit refs is one of the easiest ways to find people in extradition searches and subsequent attempts.0 -
got to work tomorrow so will pick up then
thanks for all the help and support!!!!!!!!
will be back to working for my cisco certs every night tomorrow
l8r and once again many thanx!!!!!0
