Stop motion animation

Does anyone know of the right software and equipment needed to do a reasonable stop motion animation at home? It is for youngsters so don't want to spend too much. My DD and I did a work shop about 12 months ago and had great fun and would love to have another go. We have a PC, not a Mac and currently only have a still digital camera. Any advice on suitable digital camcorder and software would be much appreciated.
