If you had £2500 to spend on a used automatic car which must be 1.3 or under to keep insurance price low and what would you get ??
i had a ford fiesta for £500 than has been nothing but trouble so i would like a reliable car to get me and from work

I've just bought a '99 Saab 93 2.0 turbo Auto for £495 and it's the cheapest car I've ever insured at less than £200. Small cars are not always necessarily the cheapest to insure as most are owned by boy racers/new drivers so they are the models that are involved in accident statistics the most. Go for an "old man" model and you may save £'s. Look at Volvos and see what insurance quotes you are getting. Time to think outside the box a little- you may be pleasantly surprised.0

The trouble is the word automatic and small don't tend to go well together.
And many of the auto boxes are not true auto boxes and can be problematic.
Perhaps think slightly bigger engine or manual (if allowed).0 -

+1 This guy is spot on.
Ford cars are generally reliable but some of their autoboxes are known to be trouble. I wouldn't touch an automatic ford as their reputation for many is that of a chocolate teapot.
WJ is right. Autoboxes from Volvo or Saab are solid. Anything from Toyotas area of the planet is the same as Aisin-Warner supply Volvos autoboxes.
Stay away from small french cars and small italian cars.0 -
but the problem is its my first year of driving so the prices rise when i put in big engine cars0

questions. why automatic did you take your test in a automatic, in which case you wouldnt be allowed to drive a manual, whereas if you took your test in a manual you could drive a automatic or manual.
over the years i've had 8 ford escort and 1 mondeo, ranging in engine sizes from 1.3 - 1.8 but all manual so never had any trouble with any of them, and most where only £300.
to keep your insurance low i would go for an "old granny car" due to other young drivers buying golfs, fiesta, etc this would higher the price due to the accidents they had "due to showing off to their friends".
So you may find that a 1.6 volvo would actually be cheaper to insure than a 1.3 ford / golf0 -

As said above, it's not the size of the engine it's the desirability of the car. Try a quote with an old Volvo or similar size/aged car.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0
