Getting a kick out of Sainsbury's Brand Matching...

.... is it just me or does anyone else enjoy this?

Just to be clear I have a Sainsburys half a mile away with easy parking or a Tescos which is 4 miles away through the centre of town.

I still use Tesco's when Im already going to be nearby but recently been enjoying buying items that are cheaper in Tesco (and Asda, but my nearest is 14 miles :( ) and getting the brand match :rotfl:

I tend to look at my regular items on mysupermarket and the ones that I can get a brand match on I will buy from Sainsbury's :j

For those not familiar with the Brand Match you need to be aware of one caveat!

You MUST spend over £20! e.g you may have £19.99 of groceries in your basket which could potentially cost you only £14-£15 at Tesco or Asda, but you won't get the brand match unless it's £20 plus!

I tend to deliberately spend just over the £20 each time to get most use out of the scheme.

  • So you not really gaining anything but the money back that youve spent on dearer products, which were cheaper in other stores anyway. Brand match products are expensive anyway.
  • sometimes useful when the special offers are out of stock in Asda/Tesco.
  • I just go straight to the cheaper shop, sainsburys is expensive, i kid you noy, waitrose I am finding is cheaper for a lot of stuff.

They save the time & transports costs involved in purchasing the same items elsewhere however they are forced to spend £20 in Sainsbury whether they need to or not to qualify & as the refund is in voucher form to reclaim their money they must shop at Sainsbury again before the voucher expires. Not that different to other supermarket price match schemes.

£14.46 higher than other supermarkets, Not sure I would be :j.
Sounds to me like you would be better shopping elsewhere if your shopping is costing that much more when you shop there, and they have you right where they want you - a returning customer to get the difference back!

If Sainsbury's know they are more expensive and are prepared to price match then why not earn loyalty by selling at the competitors price or deducting the difference on that shop at the time rather than employ devious tactics to make the customer shop there next time!
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.
  • I think you all misunderstand, the idea is toi buy things in multiple shops to take advantage of BM, i.e buy the things that are on offer at Tesco all together, for people that5 are unable to get to other supermarkets because of distance or on offers that have run out in the the other shops x

Those saying Sainsbury's is more expensive... the other day I handed someone a piece of paper telling them their shopping was nearly £20 cheaper than Tesco & Asda.

I handed out quite a few more that day that were £9/£10 cheaper than Tesco & Asda.

I've started using Sainsbury's lately BUT only after I've been to Aldi's and bought all the things on my list that are cheaper than in Sainsbury's or Tesco's.

I do get the occasional voucher (infuriates me that it only lasts a week). I find many special offers are for junk food so I'm not sure how much of those I'd buy.

Thank you for raising it, I'll take a look at mysupermarket.

Um actually not all brand match products are, for example there's nearly always an offer on chopped tomatoes which usually works out better prices than the own makes

Also, your logic is flawed on the "not gaining anything".

If I had gone all the way to Tesco and back home, it costs approximately £2 alone in petrol, not to mention the time and hassle of going through town twice to get there and back.

So, yes I now have vouchers BUT, I will use these for my regular shops in store on perishables (eg spuds, carrots, mushrooms etc which are the same price as Tescos) where I am doing a shopping that IS going to be less than £20, in fact there's been times I've gone in and only paid with the vouchers! :T
  • I just go straight to the cheaper shop, sainsburys is expensive, i kid you noy, waitrose I am finding is cheaper for a lot of stuff.

All down to your shopping list though isn't it? I mean the stuff I regularly buy may well be very different from what you buy?

I put everything in my basket on the mysupermarket site and pretty much every single time Tesco is the cheapest, I've never seen waitrose cheaper than even Sainsburys.

The only item I know that's cheaper from my regular shop is white bread flour which used to be 62p for 1.5kg in Tescos, they've recently put it up to 80p which is almost a 33% increase  so now waitrose have theirs at 70p, however, so does sainsburys ;)
