Not so much ungrateful as...well...lacking a bit of sense.

Why didn't you just get in touch with them?

I've got better things to do with my time. You must know what it's like when you get on the phone to the ILs, you can't get off the phone and you have to listen to a blow by blow account of their latest holiday/ day trip/ whatever. My sanity is more important than money.

What a rude thing to say when they've handed over £50.

My Aunt could talk the hind legs off a donkey but if she had sent me money the least I could do is phone her and thank her .

But you'd be getting £50 per cheque? And surely stopping them doing it the following year?

My 13 year old has had a bank account for a year now, and loves the freedom of having his own means to pay for things without having to ask mum and dad. He often buys things from amazon online with his debit card, or goes out to the cinema knowing he can pay for his ticket and any snacks he wants. He is quite good at managing his money and has never (so far as I know!) had a payment declined for lack of funds.

We opened his account with Barclays (because it had a branch close to where we live) and they don't allow under 18s to have Internet banking, which is a shame as I would like to be able to keep a supervisory eye on things.

Thanks for the replies. Guess its a case of ringing people to reissue. He doesn't want an account yet as there are no cashpoints near us or school, so getting any money out would mean having to go into town, and he can't be bothered to do that! Such is the joy of teenage life.

But surely if you are giving him cash he is likely to spend it in an area like a town or precinct with ATMs etc? Surely there must be a supermarket near you?

He'll build up some savings then. :money::money::money:

The Halifax have let me bank cheques in my daughters first name and my surname before, first time I took in her birth certificate, and they were quite happy to do it, as they could see she was my daughter. I didn't even have to take her birth certificate again.

My Nana used to send cheques to the grandchildren of her eldest son who lived quite a distance away. They didn't get cashed and she thought it was due to his wife, but it was never explained. This upset her greatly.

She died not knowing what she had done wrong. I thought it was a very cruel thing to have done. Her will left her money divided between her 3 children - he asked for her share to go to charity.

My last partner when he was in his twenties used to get a £5 gift voucher from his great aunt. A very small sum of money but she always got thanked and told what was bought with it.

It's good manners, and I am afraid that is lacking today with lots of people.
