Could you have a chat with your daughter and try to establish what she's nervous about? If she can identify it, it would be easier to help/deal with. It might be more than one issue for her, but that's fine. Please let us know more (or PM me) and I'll try my best in helping you. I used to do courses for people who are scared of flying and everyone I helped went flying. I can't promise anything, but I will do my best. :)

I've known people take easyJet's fear of flying courses (click here), and they've said they've been great. The best thing to do though is show her pictures of the beautiful island that is Majorca, and remind her that the flight is actually safer than the drive to the airport. Besides, Majorca's only 2 and a half hours away.

Another tip is to try to get an airport lounge before the flight, reducing the whole stress of the airport. If you're going from Birmingham, Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted the No1 Traveller lounges are really nice. You can book most lounges in the uk through FHR, who have always been good to me.

My sister gave her children something called Finegan's(?) which they got from Boots. think it's some sort of sedative but hopefully someone else might know the proper name. Try to stop her making your other 2 children anxious. She'll probably love it when she gets up in the air

    It's Phenergan.
No way would I sedate a child on a flight.

  • Hi,

I would second chatting to see if it is just a fear of the unknown or something else that is making your daughter feel nervous.

However I have 4 kids, 3 are perfectly happy to fly however there is always one ;)

I am not that fond of flying myself and keeping the kids busy distracts me from thinking too much about the fact we are flying iyswim? So I figured that the same approach is probably best for our nervous flyer. He gets to choose who he sits next to/where he sits (well as much as you can with easyjet it is the only + side to needing 6 seats!) tbh you only notice he is nervous when taking off, he has his cuddly friend and generally just holds my hand for reassurance... Once we are up in the air all the carefully selected distractions come out of their hand luggage and he gets so engrossed in playing with *insert name of electronic gadget here* you don't generally hear anything from him until he sees the trolley :D

I suspect DS has watched something on a documentary channel at some point and doesn't want to get into himself into trouble... (they are pin locked but sometimes our kids work together to crack the code )

Don't forget boiled sweets for take off/landing & have a great holiday.

    I'd sedate them all.

We have always done the Eurocamp self drive/self catering thing for our family holidays however this year we are going to Majorca AI.

My problem is my 11 year old (who has never flown) is getting increasingly scared about flying, and is saying she doesn't want to go, Her elder and younger sisters seem quite chilled about the whole trip. There is no obvious reason for her anxiety.

Has anyone got any advice or tips on how they have managed this with their kids.

If she doesn't want to go what alternative does she propose?
  • Slip her a Valium. Make sure she doesn't take it with alcohol.

yes I think that was what he probably meant. Phenergan seems to be prescribed for travel sickness so not exactly a sedative at all - panic over!

Many years ago, I used to be cabin crew & out of 130 passengers on the plane...100 of them were nervous when they got onboard. It was like getting on a bus to me but my passengers were apprehensive because it was not something that they did every day. Probably just the fear of the unknown. Once she is on the plane, there will be that much going on that she wont have time to be nervous. Someone else has already mentioned on here but is it possible that someone is teasing her at school and making her nervous ? we all know what kids can be like ! If she is still nervous when you board, have a quiet word with one of the crew, im sure they will put your daughters mind at rest. Good luck.
