Candle lighting at ceremony

Hi ladies (and gents!)!

We've received our pack from the registry office as we're having a Civil Ceremony and it mentions the option to having a candle lighting ceremony as part of the actual 'service' and says its really popular!

Love the sound of it, as I love my candles and the idea of what it represents, but have never seen one before at a wedding and was wondering if anyone else has or is having one as part of their ceremony???

Looked at candles and holders online but they seem to cost a small fortune for the proper 'unity candle sets' so was hoping for some MSE help from all you lovely ladies!!!!

Thanks in advance!! :p:p:p:A

W did this and had both R&R mums light the candles to signify the joining of the two families.

I too searched online for unity candles and was shocked by the cost.

We ended up using a candle we had had in our living room which did the trick nicely :)

It doesn't have to be a special candle you could just get a church candle from ikea or somewhere and get a pretty stand for it?

We're having this in our ceremony. We are having a Humanist wedding and they are very big on symbolism.

We are lighting two candles at the start of the cermony to represent each of us (we have chose a candle each in our favourite colour mines blue OH's purple) then after we have done the legal exchange of rings we light the 3rd candle to show 2 becoming 1.

We are also doing sand mixing, hand tieing, exchanging of gifts to show a promise to each other (i'm giving OH a memory card as my promise is to always create plenty of memories together. He is giving me his bank card lol) we are also jumping over a broom lol

That sounds lovely! I love little touches like that and having them at your wedding will make it extra special for you and your guests. Love the broom idea although I'm not sure my OH would agree with me! Sounds amazing!
  • There are some good folks here that have DIY'd them using standard plain candles. You could use any pattern you wanted.

    I haven't tried it yet.

    What a lovely idea!

Love what you are doing Faith177 I didn't think there was humanist ceremonies in england yet or are you getting married elsewhere?

    xx

    EDIT:
Looked it up myself, it's such a shame they aren't legally binding in England yet :( I would much rather have a humanist ceremony than a church or registry office.
