He will need to apply to have his tuition fees paid and, from what you've said, probably a student loan to cover his living costs.
Which part of the country do you live at the moment? This will affect who your son needs to apply to for funding.£2013 in 2013 / £353.22 /£2013 so far
Quidco: £53.15, Swagbucks: £30, Other: £27 AGC0 -
I am not a single parent but like you have never had any dealings with student finance etc when my daughter started Uni last september. But she knew what to do.... her college had told her and she did the forms with some help from me. If they are going to Uni then they are not that daft. LOL.
Unfortunately she has not managed to get a job though. Student finance is easier to sort than a job in a town full of students looking for work.0 -
If you're on a low income (as you imply) your son will be eligible for the full package of loans, grants and bursary. Although a few hours' work would be a bonus, he should be able to manage perfectly well on the funding available.
You can find out more information here.

Your son is one of the lucky ones.0

It could also depend on where you son is going. He might find it easier to get work in a larger city than a small town where there are not many jobs going.0

we also had no idea abut what to do when DD started a couple of yrs ago, amazing how fast you pick it up!!!
We are two parent family but we're still low income.
And therefore DD gets her tution fee paid fully, she also qualifies for full maintenance loan £7000, but does not get it as she also qualies for full maintenance grant.
But by getting the full maintenance grant of £3000, her loan is reduced by £1500 (appox figures) So she is better off slightly.
also as she gets full grant she is entitled to a small bursary from her uni. Each uni will have differing amounts for busaries and which students qualify. In DD case it's appox £350 and to qualify you must get full grant (which paid for laptop in her first yr) But do check if your son is entitled to a busary as they are usually non repayable.
BTW the Tution loan and maintenance loan are repayable but the grant is not!!!! So if you're low income defo worth applying.
My DD managed on just her loan/grant for her first yr, but it was tight. She lived in halls and these costs alone took her loan, so she lived on her grant. Her halls were catered so she was always fed.
She is now almost finished her second yr and has recently decided she needs abit extra so is doing 3 shifts at local mcdonalds. These shifts fit round her classes, and she is able t drop one when she needs to be on placement. Also wiht mcdonalds you should be able to swap branches - but have no idea how easy this is in practice. As DD doesn't need to do this.0
