Help think cats constipated

  • Hi, my female cat has just been diagnosed with constipation - £800 and 6 trips to the vet in the past 2 weeks and we still don't know why or how to fix it. I urge you to take her to the vet - its extremely uncomfortable if left too long and very expensive to treat

Our cat also had other symptoms: she would pace endlessly up and down, crouching down on her haunches with her tail wagging furiously every few paces. She stopped eating and drinking. She was very bad tempered.

We took her to the vet a day or two after we noticed the symptoms (we weren't sure there was anything wrong with her - its hard to tell) and the vet said there is nothing wrong - she has arthritis!! She then prescribed antibiotics (!) and painkillers

We weren't happy with that so took her to another vet who took blood tests but also found nothing wrong. 2 days later on the monday morning we dashed her back again - this time they took an XRay and discovered the constipation. She had an enema and some stuff to squirt down her mouth. That didn't work and she's been back twice since...this last time has worked and she seems much better.

We have now changed her diet from expensive vet dried food to wet food.

We were at the end of our tether and had this last treatment not worked i am not sure we could afford more or want her to keep going through the pain and discomfort.

I would say take her the vet asap...if she is constipated she may need an immediate enema and treatment....
  • Can you be absolutely certain she hasn't eaten some plastic, wool or foil that's causing a blockage?

    Vet.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

or if she goes outdoors, eating birds and mice also causes it...unidgested bones and feathers

well she has done both today ,no blood that I can see and her tummy is not tender, and she has not made many trips to the litter tray going to make sure she has some wet food every day as she was just having dry.

My cats UTIs got a lot better when I took him off of dry food completely, and I imagine a wet diet would help constipation too.
