Struggling with cooking from scratch

normally I try and cook from scratch as much as possible. However, I'm 7 weeks pregnant and really struggling to manage to cook anything - the though of handling raw meat makes me ill, I can't even go to the butchers or the meat aisle in the supermarket just now! The smell of anything cooking makes me feel quesy too (DH just made pizza n chips and although I'm forcing myself to eat it, the smell of the chips is VILE!). I've tried just light things like soup and pasta dishes but even those are a struggle without being sick...

So what nice easy things can I try and make?? I don't want to be relying on ready meals for the next 7.5 months, not good for baby or my bank balance!

    I remember those days!

Give yourself a break, it doesn't matter if you need to get ping meals for a while until you stop feeling sick! and you will feel better in a while. Get your OH to make the meals for the time being. :)

Don't let yourself get too hungry either, that always made me worse.
Hope you feel better soon x

its early days yet hun and feeling nauseous at strong smells or certain smells is par for the course.
Put a ban on frying! and if you have to buy ready cooked meats for a couple of weeks so be it.
Its great that you are trying to cook from scratch - but, your health and the babies' comes first right now. Try to make up menus which dont involve fried foods, or buying/handling raw meat.
most women find this aversion passes after a few weeks!
btw - huge congratulations on being pregnant, its a very exciting time you both!

This is what takeaways are for, it won't last forever. Go EASY on yourself.
It's not an endurance test, kick back a little until it gets better.

Can you do some batch cooking during the day? Fling the doors and windows open, put some nice smelling candles in the kitchen, would that help with the cooking odours?
You could try cooking things in the slow cooker too perhaps - you just need to bung it in and chuck the lid on so not many smells escape.

I lived on strawberry milkshake and chicken chow mein for the first 16 weeks of my pregnancy because that's all I could stomach. Just take each day as it comes. Cold foods might be better for now rather than a hot meal.

    Firstly congratulations

i remember those days...... the worst part for me I use to be a mgr at BK, - just before I found out I was expecting - as it was originally put down to a kidney infection! we had a promo on wraps and the sauces were cold Korma and cold Tikka - after 2 days of pouring that... no way!!

Your find your food likes dislikes change I went off curries, cider, but craved Bitter, had to be tetley, I remember once really wanting Shandy - in Tesco there wasn't any this assistant didn't really want to look, I just remember going I'm 6 mths pregnant I craving shandy now....... he came back with 18 cans.

Just work with what food you can eat, - even if you eat at odd hrs, it settle down.

Can you a batch bake with OH doing all the bits you can't do?

As others have said just take each day as it comes, - and enjoy the pregnancy xx
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx
  • Congratulations :D I too can relate with my last pregnancy DS2 I was sick fo the whole nine months but some days were better than others so I would cook in bulk and freeze so the rest of the family had someting decent, but there was also a few nights of egg and chips or oven fish and salad.
Just remeber to try and enjoy the pregnancy too xx

    Congratulations!

As everyone else has said don't worry about it. Maybe your OH could batch cook at the weekend? If not and for other meals you could get some tinned soup and nice bread. Cereals are good and would often eat a bowl for dinner whilst i was pregnant. Salad ans cous cous with some cold meat would also be quick and easy. Don't be afraid of buying stuff to chuck in the oven, it does get better.

Good for you, you're pregnant and need decent food so well done for not running to the takeaways everyday! As long as you get some veg/salad with every meal that should make up for the 'easy' frozen bits. Try to get some protein at every meal, even if you have to buy ready cooked chicken or sliced ham.

    Freezer food
    - pie, veg and potatoes
    - chicken kiev, potatoes and salad
    - salmon en creut style things with potatoes, veg/salad

    Easy dinners
    - Jacket potatoes, with whatever you like.
    - Quiche (use ready roll shortcrust pastry, you can fill with veg etc), I like quiche warm with baked beans (folic acid!)
    - Tarts, ready roll puff pastry, spread with red pesto and top with roasted veg (you can buy bags of this frozen) or cooked chicken/ham and cheese/mozzarella - have with salad
    - pasta bakes, as simple as you want, use a jar if you need to.
    - roast a chicken (or buy one done!) and have with potatoes and veg/salad then it will do for lunches too. Or use rest of the meat with a jar of sauce for curry/sweet and sour.
