I'm another advocate of descending on a music shop with a packed lunch (possibly evening meal too :o ), but only after finding out as much as possible beforehand about the pros and cons of different aspects of the instrument.

DS and i spent from 11am til 4.15 pm in the same music shop before Christmas, DS had seen an electric drum kit (£700 worth ) he thought he was going to fall in love with, got to the shop and it was a pile of pants.....after a long day of discussion, help, advice and negotiation they sourced exactly what my son was after, directly from the manufacturers, so so glad we didnt fall into the trap of buying without trying....

Only other thing i would add is spend a sensible amount because your daughters interest in the instrument may become more honed as her style develops and you could be left with a very expensive mistake...

Guys, don't know if anyone is interested in an update or not but we finally got her guitar sorted out.

Her tutor advised going to a particular shop to try some out, he reckoned they were very helpful there and would advise her accurately.

She tried out Yamahas and other makes but seemed very undecided about them all and didn't appear very enthusiatic tbh. I was half expecting for us to leave empty handed.

The chap who served us was very knowledgeable and took time to talk to her and ask her what type of stuff she was learning etc. He brought another one out for her to try and she instantly liked it. It was a perfect 'fit' for her and she liked the feel of it and the sound.

Anyway, just thought I'd let you know. Thanks again for all your input.

I must say, it looks lovely. I hope you have many happy hours listening to her practice, or even just 'twiddle'. I'm missing DS3 just thinking about this!

We've just spent the last hour in tears. (Hysterical tears.)

She's trying to get me to play her old rubbish, tiny, out of tune and warped Argos job whilst she sits with her all new singing and dancing fancy pants thing.

She's trying to teach me to play. It's like trying to get a monkey to knit a scarf wearing boxing gloves. :rotfl:

She got a music sheet from school and I'm annoying the heck out of her by singing along cos I know all the words to that one! :rotfl:

Anyway, I can now do the first 4 notes. I'm a work in progress ........... only progress will be painfully slow. :D

Nice looking guitar, I would have been jealous of one of my mates having one like that.
I hope that she sticks with it.

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

There is always ONE song which you start with, which will drive everyone around you to a state where you want to smash the thing over their head.

With many of my Christian friends, it was a chorus which went:

Can it be [long pause for fumbling chord change] true
The things they [long pause for fumbling chord change] say of [long pause for fumbling chord change] you

    and so on ...

A 'starter' because it only requires 3 chords and is in regular 4/4 time.

DS3 was obsessed with 'Mad World', which he was learning on the keyboard, and the guitar, and which seemed to be played constantly everywhere we went. I even heard it on Radio 4 at regular intervals!!!

BTW, I think singing along is essential to her progress. It'll make sure she keeps in time, regardless of the chord changes. :rotfl:
