How can estimated price be lower if unit price is higher

Good afternoon,

I have moved into a flat which has Electricity with EDF and Gas with BG, both on standard.
I have gone to comparison sites, and both EDF and BF websites to get quotes on dual fuel.

EDF's Fixed Blue Promise June 2014 has higher unit rates, but their estimated monthly price is lower than BG.
British Gas Online Variable February 2014 has lower unit rates, but their estimated price is higher than EDF.

I simply don't understand how this can be possible, are estimates actually precise? Or should I simply trust the unit rates.

Have you registered with the current suppliers to open up accounts in your name? Do that first. Wait until the next billing cycle then do a comparison. That way you will know about your actual usage and can do a better comparison. A little pain now may prevent a larger one later.

Look at the detail of the tariffs involved.

I know EDF, for example, give 6% discount for paying monthly by DD, and a further discount for dual fuel. Not sure how the BG tariff is made up but it will all be explained.
e.g. are standing charges the same??? I very much doubt it

I have registered online with British Gas, have not done so with EDF yet while I was thinking about what to do. I suppose it is better that I register now, while I see what's best.

Standing charges are higher for Gas in EDF (I think) and lower in Electricity. For BG it's the other way round.

I had thought about the 6% discount, but wasn't sure if it was done in every bill or something like cash back once a year style.
