Has she had a season? The vet may feel she's not had long enough after a season for everything to have settled down "down there", seasons cause increased blood flow to that area for a while which can cause an increase in bleeding or a slightly higher risk of complications in the op.
Alternatively, if Lolly is young then maybe he doesn't feel she's developed enough physically - either her 'bits' may be smaller making the op a bit more fiddly, or he may feel she'd benefit from having her hormones left intact while her body grows (as they play a part of the development of bones etc.)

Give them a call and ask if it will put your mind at rest, they won't mind at all - I've often got home and realised I forgot to ask something or clarify some details and the receptionist will help if she can, or ask the vet for me.

If they are spayed too early, it can cause them to be incontinent in the future, it can be controlled but better not to have to. My friend had a dog like that, used to 'leak' every six months or so when her season would have been due.
If the vet says to wait, I would, better to leave it longer than have complications.
  • I would definitely trust the vets advice on this. If you are worried or very curious then perhaps you could ask the vets receptionists to check why this was for you?

I'm not too sure if it's the same for girl cats, but when I first got my wee boy the vet said they don't like to neuter them before 6 months because there's certain hormones released when they're a few months old, and early neutering can stunt growth. Not too sure if this completely accurate, it was a few years back so I might be getting it a bit wrong, but the general idea's there.......

It can be true that if neutered before 6 months of age, then male cats may not turn into great big looking bruisers with large jowls. But with those hormones, comes greatly increased tendencies to spray, fight, wander, and get knocked over.

Luckily now there are very few vets in my area who wont do males before 6 months. The only exception being if the testicles have not descended, in which case the vets may wish to see if they descend naturally in the next few months before having to search for them internally.

Also, far more vets now spay dogs before their first season. Unfortunately I was told to wait with one of my dogs until after her first season- she was very ill and in a lot of pain whilst in season, and went straight into a false pregnancy, eventually needing a lot of medication to be able to get her spayed and her body back to normal.

    How old is Lola?

That makes sense, I ended up getting my wee boy done at 5 months because he started being 'inappropriate' and the vet reckoned he was ready :o He's a Siamese so he's very long and lanky but he's got a really dainty face still and mahoosive ears :D

If she had the visible symptoms of her season in Nov/Dec the vet may be wanting to wait a bit longer - a season is more than just the vulva swelling or the blood spotting, so her uterus would remain slightly swollen with an increased blood flow for a while after the visible signs of season. Might be why the vet wants to give it a month, generally it's done about 3 months after a season (between the two seasons - most dogs will have a season every 6 months, though this can vary) so end of Feb, start of March is probably more in that timescale.
